The Senior Finance Officer role is a full time position based in Canberra. The position reports to the Financial Controller and is part of the Operations team. The role is responsible for processing of the national payroll and undertaking senior Finance duties including the preparation of financial reports, reporting on special project and grants and preparing associated financial reports.

Duties And Responsibilities


  • Process national payroll for all PSA staff on a fortnightly basis including calculation and remittance of payroll liabilities and attending to payroll related queries.
  • Prepare reports for special projects and grants including liaison with coordinators within the organisation, reviewing financial information to ensure correct allocations, preparing accruals, preparing periodic standard reports during the life of the project and financial reports for audit purposes at the completion of the grant project.
  • Assist the Finance Manager and Chief Operating Officer (COO) as required and provide advice and assistance to other member of the Finance team as required.
  • Prepare month end journals and general ledger reconciliations for payroll, projects and publication work in progress.
  • Assist the Finance Manager in the preparation and lodgement of payroll tax and annual certification of remuneration for all states for Work Cover purposes.

  • About The Ideal Candidate


  • Previous experience in a payroll processing role and familiarity with payroll processing systems and/or Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS);
  • Current knowledge of payroll related matters including superannuation, payroll tax, workers compensation, employee entitlements and industrial instruments;
  • Previous experience in financial reporting for projects and grants (highly desirable).
  • A sound understanding of accrual accounting concepts;
  • A qualification (or working toward) in accounting, economics, finance or a related discipline;
  • Strong customer service orientation with good communication skills (both oral and written);
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail in clerical tasks and systematic work practices;
  • The ability to work in a discrete, courteous and tactful way and deal with confidential information appropriately;
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
