Job Introduction

BBC R&D () carries out research and development activities in all the fields of technology that affect the BBC and its public service mission. We make sure that the BBC is properly equipped for the future, either by developing new technologies ourselves or working to refine them through development and standardisation. We work in small teams of engineers, project managers, producers, research scientists and designers. Our aim is to strong creative thinkers who are capable of applying their skills to a wide range of problems.

Future Experience Technologies (FXT) is a research section within BBC R&D. Our projects share a focus on how changes in technology will improve the experiences of BBC audiences and content-makers.

As a business analyst in FXT, you'll need to be comfortable with breaking down core pieces of work into meaningful slices which our product engineering team can pick up for delivery.

In practice, this could mean anything from documenting business processes and workflows, capturing and reporting on experiments, collating and sharing user research feedback, and writing user stories.

That's not all however, you'll need to be comfortable with the process of discovery. That is, working closely with the Product Manager to figure out how ideas could best be realised - with a focus on meeting the needs of everyday people. In practice, this process means you could be running/facilitating design sprints, interviews & workshops.

Role Responsibility

  • Facilitate workshops including delivery and product teams to expose stories, identify acceptance criteria to identify a minimum viable product.
  • Responsible for the product's transition to 'live' environments, including capturing and monitoring audience feedback and usage data.
  • Helping to shape and define team practices and processes to continually improve agile ways of working.
  • Research and interpret consumer usage and industry consumer trend data to contribute to the development of product solutions.
  • Assist the product manager in defining the product goals and feature requirements.
  • Collect, understand, own and communicate the requirements for products, projects, and features, translating these into user stories and acceptance criteria.
  • Manage a product improvement backlog and work with delivery teams to keep it prioritised and up to date.
  • Work with the project/delivery manager & delivery team to size backlog items and ensure optimal flow through the delivery process.
  • Collaboratively writing acceptance tests with the software development teams and test engineers, ensuring the delivered solution meets the requirements and agreed quality criteria.

Are you the right candidate?
  • Experience working within multi-disciplinary teams delivering software projects within a variety of methodologies (particularly Agile).
  • Experience in providing relevant data in order to support product decisions based on evidence.
  • Ability to simplify complex problems into component parts and evaluate systematically
  • Experience of running and facilitating workshops, particularly at Discovery stage
  • Experience communicating concepts and ideas to stakeholders at all levels within organisations, including oral and written presentations, proposals and reports.
  • Proven ability to influence decision-making at all levels within an organisation, and in a variety of contexts
  • Experience gathering, analysing and interpreting product usage data.

  • Enthusiasm, curiosity and a desire to improve the team
  • Knowledge or experience of multivariate testing (MVT) techniques to determine the success of product changes
  • Experience of working in Research & Development, particularly in Product Development
  • Experience of influencing stakeholders at all levels
