This position works from the Newton Corporate Office and reports directly to the Accounting Manager.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Senior Staff Accountant plays a key role in all accounting functions, including monthly close, financial statement production, reconciliations and work papers, and accounting team development. This role directly supervises staff accountants and accounts payable clerks. In addition, this role will interact directly with all levels and areas of the organization in order to explain and maintain financial statements according to generally accepted accounting principles. As part of senior finance and accounting leadership, this role with works closely with fellow senior accountants, the Accounting Manager and the Controller to implement and refine process and system improvements to take the finance and accounting team to the next level.

  • Preparing and posting journal entries, maintaining the general ledger, and preparing financial statements according to GAAP.
  • Reviewing accounts payable transactions to ensure accuracy and timeliness of payments.
  • Analyzing cost of sales and ensuring accruals are appropriately made at month–end.
  • Reviewing balance sheet accounts and preparing all appropriate audit work papers and reconciliations to support balances and transactions.
  • Preparing and filing monthly sales and use tax returns.
  • Explaining income statement and balance sheet variances to operations managers and senior management.
  • Managing staff accountants and accounts payable clerks.
  • Assisting in the development and implementation of process improvements for accounting controls, procedures and accounting systems.
  • Assisting in ad hoc projects.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in accounting or finance.
  • 5 years of progressive accounting or finance experience including supervisory experience
ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Job operates in a clerical office setting. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
  • This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand as necessary. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and move objects up to 20 pounds.
  • 10% travel is expected for this position.
  • Occasional weekend work may be required.
