About the job

Swinburne University of Technology is looking for outstanding leader for the School of Health Sciences to lead it to the next stage of its development. Over the last three years the School, since being formed in 2014, has undergone significant growth in offering innovative, industry-relevant teaching courses, and significant growth in research productivity and performance. The candidate will provide a distinct vision of how the School can contribute to the university's vision 2025 to be a world class university creating social and economic impact through science, technology and innovation. The university has ambitious plans to ensure our graduates are ready for a world of uncertainty and complexity and we aspire to have research outcomes that have impact on industries, communities and society.
Candidates must be confident in leading and facilitating interdisciplinary teaching and research within the University by actively engaging across the university and with external organisations. Candidates are expected to lead the School to deliver substantial student and research outcomes and impact through collaboration with industry, business, government and other external organisations, and support the University to achieve key objectives and targets in its 2025 vision.

The Dean is responsible for the academic leadership and operational management of the School Health Sciences. Reporting to the Faculty Pro Vice Chancellor, the Dean will work collaboratively with other Deans, Associate Deans, Centre Directors and Department Chairs to develop and implement strategies aligned with the university's strategic direction to be Australia's leading University in Science, Technology and Innovation. The faculty has two other Schools - the School of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities, and the School of Design.

The Dean will lead the Academic Departments and Research Centres within the School, contribute to the strategic development and management of the School's academic offerings, research profile, student experience and external engagement.

The Dean will seek out and foster new opportunities for collaboration and partnerships among disciplines within and between faculties and will be responsible for building the external profile of the School. The Dean will provide support to the Faculty Pro Vice Chancellor in representing the university and faculty in external engagement and research activities relevant to the faculty and related areas of study.

The Dean has seven direct reports as Department Chairs and/or Research Centre Directors. The Departments and Research Centre are:

  • Department of Health and Medical Sciences
  • Department of Psychological Sciences
  • Department of Statistics, Data Science and Epidemiology
  • Department of Health Professionals
  • Centre for Mental Health
  • Centre for Human Psychopharmacology
  • Centre for Forensic Behavioural Science


The Professorial position will be a continuing position and the successful candidate will be given the role of Dean for a period of five years, which will be annually reviewed and may be renewed after five years, if mutually agreed. The Professorial role comes with 17% Superannuation and the role of Dean comes with a salary loading of 20% plus a further annual performance based bonus.

Skills and experience

To be successful in this role you will need to demonstrate the following:

  • A sustained and outstanding track record in motivating, leading and managing high performing and multi-disciplinary teams
  • Outstanding national and/or international reputation as a research leader and an internationally recognised track record of reearch in a relevant field as evidenced by an extensive range of publications in top-tier journals and by measurable high impact outcomes
  • A consistent history of initiating, obtaining and leading competitive research grants and involvement in research through collaborations with other universities, industry, business and/or government
