Tax Risk & Quality (R&Q) advises the practice on all issues to do with managing risk, regulation, legal obligations and adherence to firm and network R&Q policies. We also work closely xLoS, with other R&Q teams, Office of General Counsel (OGC), Compliance and Independence. As a major R&Q practice in the PwC global network we link in to global Tax and xLoS R&Q to promote best practice globally and influence the global risk agenda.

The team is led by a senior Partner and three Directors and consists of 36 people spread across the UK, with 40% based outside London.
About the position:We are looking for Managers to join the team. This may be with a view to permanent transfer or as a cycle of experience before returning to the practice. The role might be full time or, for the right candidate, a part-time arrangement may be possible, allowing you to continue client-facing work whilst also contributing to R&Q. Precise arrangements to fit with a your development plan and career aims can be discussed at interviewOur primary need is for London or Midlands based people, but we can be flexible and welcome applications from people based elsewhere with flexibility to spend some time in those locations. Again, precise arrangements can be discussed at interviewBusiness Unit Leadership support: Members of R&Q are assigned to support a particular Business Unit(s) or team(s) to provide on-the-ground support. This usually means sitting with them (and travelling around their various locations) to get to know the business, its strategy and its risks.

Our R&Q people then work closely with the BU's internal R&Q Partner and BU Leader to develop and implement an R&Q plan to meet the specific needs of the business. This will involve running a training and communications programme and helping the business find the most efficient and effective ways to manage their risks, sometimes developing bespoke solutions and running customised initiatives to meet their needs.

Engagement team support:

Our people advise partners/directors and engagement teams in those BUs on: Proposals and winning work – guiding them through potential risk issues and solutions
Client acceptance and reputational issues – escalating sensitive matters to firm leadership and supporting the practice through acceptance committees
Audit independence – navigating the increasingly complex regulations
Contracting – finding the most practical and commercial outcomes to complex contracting challenges and negotiating with clients
Working cross border with other PwC firms – navigating the risks to the UK firm and network policy
Working with third parties in alliances and joint business relationships – supporting teams through the risk and regulatory considerations
Regulatory compliance – which for many teams means ensuring compliance with external regulations

R&Q projects: There are lots of opportunities to get involved in specific projects to enhance and improve Tax R&Q. R&Q is going through an ambitious transformation programme and we are looking for people with ideas and willing to get involved, using their experience and skills to make a real difference and bring about change. We also tie this into people's development plans and use it to help broaden and deepen skills and professional attributes to aid progression. Examples of recent projects include: Working with the Tax R&Q partner to present Tax-wide risks to firm leadership
Developing a new R&Q processing hub to make more efficient and effective compliance with risk procedures
Developing a risk 'chat-box' concept to help the practice navigate firm policy, guidance and procedures
Developing new policies to help a specific part of the practice deal with a particular commercial challenge or regulatory need
Reviewing the firm's xLoS R&Q policies to re-design and re-draft to better serve the business

Development and progression:The role presents a great opportunity to build profile both within your existing part of the practice, but also more widely across one or more Business Units, Skills Networks, Tax Leadership and xLoS. You will be engaging at leadership level throughoutWe are looking for the next generation of leaders in Tax and there is an active policy to work with our people to develop their experience and skills as part of their personal development plan to help them achieve their career ambitionsFull training on the technical aspects will be provided and will enhance your skills if and when you return to the practice or lay the foundations for a deep knowledge specialism if you remain in R&QRequirements:We are looking for people who are able to engage with leadership across Tax at all levels. What qualities are we looking for? Pragmatic and commercial – R&Q does not work in an ivory tower or vacuum. You will need to apply sound common sense to complex challenges and find a sensible and workable solution to manage a risk
Energy, drive and a true self-starter– the role is what you make of it. You will have considerable autonomy to work with others or by yourself to identify, analyse and manage the specific risks affecting the parts of the business you support and the projects you work on. We need someone to be pro-active, juggling responsibilities and priorities, to make that happen and have an impact
Relationships – you will have clients. They will be a Business Unit Leader, a BU R&Q Partner, engagement partners/directors and their teams. You need to apply all your client relationship training to develop and deepen those relationships so you meet their needs and R&Q enhances their businesses and helps them go to market
Organised – you need an excellent track record in managing a portfolio of work and being adaptable and flexible. You will need to be well organised and able to deal with large amounts of information whilst retaining an excellent attention to detail Previous experience in risk management, compliance or regulation is not required. The technical skills will come with training and experience – but you need to be up for this since this will require important and significant self-learning. You will need to take the initiative to ensure it is a success.
