Head of Financial Institutions Group

UKGI is the government's centre of expertise on corporate finance and corporate governance, working on some of its most critical and complex commercial tasks. As Head of Financial Institutions Group you will have a vital, high-profile role at the heart of the UK banking industry.

From 31 March, UK Government Investments (UKGI) will be responsible for managing the government's majority shareholding in The Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc (RBS) and 100 per cent shareholding and loans in UK Asset Resolution Ltd (UKAR) and its subsidiaries.

About the role

UKGI is looking for a leader for the Financial Institutions Group within UK Government Investments. You will be a member of the UKGI executive committee, which is responsible for the day to day running of UKGI, and will lead and manage the Financial Institutions Group. This small, highly expert team numbering approximately 10, is primarily responsible for the UK government's investments in both RBS and UKAR.

You will be responsible for exercising HM Government's rights as a shareholder in matters of governance and strategy in line with UKGI's mandate to operate as a commercial arms-length shareholder. Other key responsibilities include:

The design and execution of a plan to dispose of the government's investments in an active and orderly way over time with the objective of maximising sustainable value for the taxpayer, while paying due regard to the maintenance of financial stability and acting in a way that promotes competition.
Continuing to maintain and build credibility with the investor community, senior politicians and officials (particularly in HM Treasury), and top-level individuals in the banking and financial services sector and provide advice to the highest level of government.
Being a member the Transactions Committee, a sub-committee of the main UKGI Board, as well as being a member of, or an observer on, the board of UK Asset Resolution.

About you

We are looking for a leader with exceptional financial acumen and strategic vision, and extensive financial services experience. Substantial capital markets experience and previous coverage of UK Financial Institutions market will be important.

You will have personal credibility, gravitas and authority to negotiate on complex and difficult issues with chairmen/CEOs of the investee companies, the investor community, and Cabinet-level ministers and senior civil servants and to work effectively with a range of advisors; be politically astute and a confident, articulate and measured leader, with first-rate interpersonal skills together with a diplomatic, collegiate and persuasive style.
